The local health insurance system in Luxembourg

Luxembourg provides very high-quality healthcare services. Medical staff are well trained and very often speak English and French. The medical facilities, which are numerous in the capital, are well equipped. In rural areas, access to health centers may be limited. The Luxembourg National Health Fund (CNS) manages all hospitals in the country and sets the rates for all consultations.

The public health system is funded by compulsory contributions from residents and companies. It provides Luxembourg nationals with access to certain types of healthcare free of charge, although supplementary medical coverage is mandatory. Salaried expatriates are also required to take out supplementary health insurance through their employers. Non-salaried expatriates or self-employed persons must take out private international health insurance.

For European nationals, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will only cover some types of emergency care.
