International Health insurance in Malta

The quality of healthcare in Malta is of a very high standard. It is available from both the public (state-funded) and private systems. Although the public clinics provide very good quality care, the private health facilities offer shorter waiting times and more options in terms of treatment (slightly more advanced techniques, etc.).

Maltese doctors

To consult a general practitioner in Malta you can go directly to a pharmacy as most of them have a room for consultations. Some GPs also offer consultations in private health facilities.

In Malta, doctors do not keep medical records (test results, for example), it is the patient’s responsibility to keep them and bring them to the different consultations. The consultation is often paid for in cash and costs between 12 and 15 euros.

Maltese specialists

You can consult a specialist by making an appointment directly in their office. Sometimes you may be asked for a referral. The consultation is usually paid for in cash and costs between 30 and 80 euros, depending on the specialty. Remember to keep your bills to be reimbursed by your international health insurance in Malta.

You are free to choose your hospital and no referral is required. You can choose between a public or private hospital. There is not much difference between the two. For your information, a private hospital is a clinic where the quality of care is similar to public hospitals.

For European nationals: remember to present your EHIC or insurance certificate beforehand to benefit from the direct billing system.

Pharmacies are generally open from 9am to 1pm and from 4.30pm to 7pm Monday to Saturday. Some drugs are only available on prescription. Others are available without a prescription.
